Ayra Starr and Wizkid, two of Afrobeats’ came together again on “Gimme Dat,” a breezy, tropical single released Thursday (April 24). The track marks their latest collaboration since the 2022 standout “2 Sugar” from Whizkid’s “More Love, Less Ego” album.

The 22-year-old singer, affectionately known as the “Sabi Girl,” first teased “Gimme Dat” with a sun-drenched Instagram clip last week. It shows her vibing to the track during a golden-hour moment as the smooth beat fades into Wizkid’s instantly recognizable vocals. She playfully captioned—the anticipation for the duet swelled among fans.

Produced by VybeO and Mikabeatz, “Gimme Dat” draws from early 2000s nostalgia. It reflects Wyclef Jean and Mary J. Blige’s 2000 hit “911.” The track, a Billboard staple in its own right, climbed to No. 6 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and No. 38 on the Hot 100. Also, gaining a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. The nod to the classic adds a layer of depth to the infectious rhythm and modern groove of Starr and Wizkid’s reimagining.

Thus, “Gimme Dat” arrives as Starr’s second release of the year, following February’s heartfelt “All The Love.” It also marks Wizkid’s return to the airwaves since dropping Morayo, his sixth studio album, last November through Starboy Entertainment and RCA Records. Also, the LP, much like Starr’s critically praised sophomore effort, The Year I Turned 21 (released May 2024), peaked at No. 4 on Billboard’s World Albums chart.

So, both artists continue to ride the wave of international recognition. Starr earned a Grammy nomination for Best African Music Performance with her global hit “Rush,” while Wizkid received his fifth career nod in the same category for “MMS,” his electrifying collaboration with Asake. Their previous duet, “2 Sugar,” was also honored with a nomination for Best Afrobeats at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards—the first year the category was introduced.

With “Gimme Dat,” Ayra Starr and Wizkid demonstrate once again that their chemistry is undeniable. Seamlessly blending classic R&B inspiration with the vibrant pulse of Afrobeats, the track is poised to soundtrack sunset soirées and late-night dancefloors alike.
