Bob Marley and Lauryn Hill’s timeless duet, “Turn Your Lights Down Low“, has officially been certified Silver in the United Kingdom. The certification, awarded by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), marks sales of over 200,000 units in the UK. Originally featured on Bob Marley and the Wailers’ iconic 1977 album Exodus, Turn Your Lights Down Low was reimagined in 1999 as a collaboration with Lauryn Hill.

This updated version appeared on Chant Down Babylon, a compilation album that paired Marley’s classics with contemporary artists. Hill brought a fresh perspective to Marley’s soulful ballad by adding her vocals and a rap verse. The duet achieved significant commercial success upon its release. It reached No. 1 on the UK R&B Chart and performed well internationally, topping charts in New Zealand and Romania. The track also earned a nomination for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals at the 2001 Grammy Awards.

The accompanying music video, directed by Francis Lawrence, was filmed in Jamaica and celebrated Marley’s cultural roots. Featuring scenes of Jamaican nightlife and Hill performing alongside Rohan Marley, Bob Marley’s son, the video added a visual narrative that complemented the song’s themes of love and connection. By blending Marley’s reggae foundation with Hill’s soulful artistry, the track bridges musical eras and genres. Its continued relevance highlights the universal appeal of themes like love, unity, and cultural pride.

This milestone celebrates two legendary artists and reinforces their cultural impact on global music history. The enduring appeal of Turn Your Lights Down Low serves as a reminder of the power of music to transcend time and connect people across different cultures and generations.
