Shenseea’s Passionate Tribute to Jamaica’s Rich Musical Legacy
Dancehall icons Shenseea and Vybz Kartel were celebrated at the prestigious 2025 MOBO Awards, held on February 18 at Newcastle’s Utilita Arena. The event, which honors achievements in music of Black origin, highlighted their significant contributions to Caribbean music and culture.
Shenseea secured her second MOBO Award, winning the Best Caribbean Music Act category. She became the first female Jamaican artist to win a MOBO Award and receive a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album in the same year. Her sophomore album, Never Gets Late Here, released in 2024, earned her widespread acclaim and a Grammy nod.
In the fiercely competitive category, Shenseea outshone notable nominees such as Popcaan, Skillibeng, Spice, YG Marley, and last year’s winner Valiant. Dancehall legend Vybz Kartel was awarded the MOBO Impact Award, making history as the first Jamaican artist to receive this honor. The award recognizes his profound influence on music and culture despite personal challenges. Kartel delivered an emotional acceptance speech, reflecting on his journey through 13 years of incarceration and his battle with Graves’ disease.
Accompanied by his son Likkle Vybz and fiancée Sidem, Kartel expressed gratitude to his family, fans, and team. He also talked about faith, change, and forgiveness during his heartfelt remarks. The ceremony concluded with a powerful performance by Spice, who presented Kartel with the award. Kartel then captivated the audience with a 90-second medley of his hits. The 2025 MOBO Awards celebrated diversity and excellence across various genres, including hip-hop, R&B, Afrobeats, and reggae. Hosted by Eddie Kadi and Indiyah Polack, the event was streamed live on YouTube and will be broadcast on BBC One on February 21.
