Corbin Returns With Crisis Kid: A New Evolution in Sound
After a three-and-a-half-year hiatus, Corbin, the artist formerly known as Spooky Black, has made a return with his third studio album, Crisis Kid. This new album is about the evolution of Corbin’s artistry, mixing emotion with genre-defying sounds. “I naturally write about sadness,” Corbin shared in an official statement. “But with this record especially, I’m trying to make a pivot…to make music that heals.”
While Corbin’s early SoundCloud energy remains, Crisis Kid introduces a new guitar-based sound that is unlike anything he has released before. The album’s melodies are comparable to those of iconic bands like New Order and Drab Majesty, incorporating elements of indie rock and new wave into his trademark darkness. Tracks like “Carbon Monoxide” and “Come Down” are ideal examples of this shift, offering jangly rhythms and contemplative lyricism that reflect his newfound sobriety and clarity.
The album’s sonic vision comes courtesy of Hendrik Schneider, whose previous collaborations with Charli XCX and Drain Gang give the album its experimental, glossy finish. The result is an esoteric blend of sounds that stretch beyond traditional genre boundaries without compromising on Corbin’s trademark introspection.
In celebration of the release of Crisis Kid, he is embarking on his first tour since 2017—the Clown On Stage North American Headline Tour. The nine-date tour sold out instantly, a reflection of the unwavering loyalty of his fan base. With Crisis Kid, Corbin has made an album that shows his musical evolution and self-discovery. This album is a new chapter for an artist still reinventing himself without compromising his roots.
