Marc B. Laykind, the attorney for Dancehall artist Rygin King, expressed strong confidence that the criminal gun possession charges against his client will soon be dismissed. “The dismissal of charges is imminent,” Laykind stated. Rygin King, whose legal name is Matthew Smith, pleaded not guilty and will return to Queens Supreme Criminal Court on August 9.

The charges arose following a July police stop in Queens, where a loaded firearm was discovered in a vehicle carrying King and his associates. This encounter could lead to a minimum sentence of three and a half years if they are convicted under New York’s strict gun laws.

King, who became disabled following a life-threatening shooting in 2020, took to Instagram to communicate directly with his fans. “Despite the challenges, I remain committed to proving that your faith in me is justified. The ultimate outcome will reflect our collective resilience,” he assured his followers.

His legal battles and ongoing recovery have significantly influenced his music career. His latest albums, “Therapy” (2022) and “Recovery” (2024), delve into his personal struggles and triumphs post-attack, which left him confined to a wheelchair and enduring multiple surgeries.

The case against King has garnered considerable attention, highlighting the artist’s turbulent journey and the broader implications of gun control debates in the music industry. As the court date approaches, both fans and critics are watching closely, awaiting the resolution of a case that could have significant repercussions for King’s career and personal life.
