Shaggy Makes History with Afrobeats Chart Debut

Reggae and Dancehall icon Shaggy has notched another career milestone, landing his first entry on Billboard’s US Afrobeats Songs chart. The collaborative effort, “When She’s Around (Funga Macho)” featuring Rwandan artist Bruce Melodie, debuted on the chart following its October 2023 release.

The infectious track, produced by AJR and boasting a playful music video shot in Miami Beach, also debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart for the week ending March 30th.

“Bruce’s talent is undeniable, and this collaboration opens up new horizons for both of us,” Shaggy shared in a statement to DancehallMag. “I’m thrilled to be a part of this project and hope it spreads joy and happiness the world over.”

Melodie echoed the sentiment, calling the collaboration “a dream come true” and highlighting the fusion of their distinct styles. “When She’s Around (Funga Macho)” is a vibrant blend of African rhythms and reggae vibes, sure to resonate with fans worldwide.

The Billboard Afrobeats Songs Chart, launched in early 2022, ranks the 50 most popular Afrobeats songs in the United States based on streaming activity and download sales. This achievement marks a significant moment for Shaggy’s ever-evolving sound and the growing influence of Afrobeats music globally.

Meanwhile, YG Marley’s debut single, “Praise Jah In The Moonlight,” continues its impressive global run. While falling to No. 62 on the Billboard Hot 100 after peaking at No. 34, the song maintains a strong presence on various international charts, including No. 11 on Billboard Global 200 Excl. US and No. 37 on Billboard Canadian Hot 100.

The Reggae Albums chart remains dominated by Bob Marley and the Wailers, with Legend: The Best Of Bob Marley and the Wailers holding the No. 1 spot for the 219th non-consecutive week. Shaggy’s Best of Shaggy: The Boombastic Collection sits comfortably at No. 2, followed by Sean Paul’s Dutty Classics Collection at No. 3.
